My mummy is a wonderful
woman. She is very active even in her late fifties. I often wonder how she can
manage doing even the household things that my neighbours think are men’s
business.
A fortnight ago, we
decided to have a new fence for our house. The existing bamboo fence had got an
ugly and dilapidated look. I was ready to buy bamboos and wires for the
material, but there was a problem – Who would do the work? I talked to a man
who was known for this kind of work, and he said the charge would be Rs. 500 a
day for his wage. It was a peak time for the labourers and they would easily
get a work on wage at the building sites. So, they generally would not be ready
for other works.
The man was too expensive
for us. Also, he was not ready to work for us because he was busy. So, my
mother decided that she would herself do the job. I was not convinced until she
had split the bamboos into long narrow sticks and started tying them to each
other with the wires. But she did it!
Finally, she made such a
beautiful fence in front of our house that every passerby says, “Ahaaa! What a
beautiful fence! Who made it?” They are amazed to know that it was the fruit of
a week-long toil of my mother, a senior woman.
