Carl Sandburg (1878-1967)
This poem dramatically exposes
the bitter reality of war through the innocent perspective of a young girl.
When the little girl saw the parade for the first time, she asked what they were.
She got the answer that they were soldiers. Then she asked again what the
soldiers were. Another answer she got that they were for war. The soldiers
fight and try to kill as many foes as they can. The girl studied for some time
and said the soldiers start the war but nobody returns alive. This is the
darkest picture of war.
